2007-08 College Football Bowl Picks

by admin on August 1, 2010

Welcome to Mike King’s College Football Picks for the 2007-08 football season! I have watched and studied NCAA football from coast-to-coast this year and offer opinions on each team! All my opinions are non-bias and are my staunch picks to win this year. Enough fooling around let us get to the match-ups!

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia: San Diego Dec. 20, 9 p.m. ESPN HD

Utah (8-4), Mountain West No. 3

vs.

Navy 8-4, Independent

The Utes of Utah and Navy kick off the bowl season in a game featuring teams with two different styles. Quarterback

Colorado is one of the few teams in a bowl game that scores less points than it gives up. Alabama was the only BCS conference team to lose to

Winner: Alabama 28, Colorado 21

Cal is another one of those mystery teams that probably does not deserve a bowl bid. They won five straight games and were ranked #2, and then unexpectedly they dropped off the face of the earth and lost six of seven to finish with a .500 record. They face a tough Air Force team that averages 300 yards on the ground. Only two of Air Force’s wins were against teams with a winning record. All three of their losses were against teams with a winning represent. I contemplate Cal gets back on the right track, they do have the better athletes after all.

Roady’s Humanitarian: Boise, Idaho Dec. 31, 2 p.m. ESPN2

Georgia Tech (7-5), ACC No. 6

vs.

Fresno State (8-4), WAC No. 3

This will be a estimable game. Fresno State was finish to beating Texas AM earlier in the year. I think this is there chance to knock off one of the big boys since the game is in Idaho. GT will have to travel cross country to meet up with a team trying to earn respect year in and year out.

Winner: Fresno State 26, Georgia Tech 21

Brut Sun: El Paso, Texas

South Florida (9-3), Big East No. 4

vs.

Oregon (8-4), Pac-10 No. 4

Both South Florida and Oregon were ranked as high as No. 2 in the BCS standings, now they meet up in the Sun Bowl. South Florida has knocked off some quality teams this year like Auburn and West Virginia. Oregon has as well, beating USC, Michigan and Arizona State. The problem is these two teams are headed in different directions heading into this game. The Ducks have dropped three straight games since losing QB Dennis Dixon for the season. Meanwhile, the Bulls of South Florida ended with three straight wins. Lets be honest here it was a terrible call by the Sun Bowl tantalizing Oregon to play in this game. Typically, the No. 3 Pac-10 team plays in the Sun Bowl. That Pac-10 team was Oregon Situation (8-4), who defeated Oregon in the civil war but Oregon can draw fans so they got the invite over a team who deserved it more. The Ducks have lost procedure too many people to injuries to win this game; if they do, it will be one of the bigger upsets this bowl season.

Winner: South Florida 31, Oregon 10

Gaylord Hotels Music City: Nashville, Tenn. Dec. 31, 4 p.m. ESPN HD

Florida Plot (7-5), ACC No. 6

vs.

Kentucky (7-5), SEC No. 9

Florida State has one of the weakest offenses to make a bowl game. They have broke the 30 point designate objective one time this year, and that was help in game two against UAB. Their average point margin is +1. Kentucky has one of the best QB in the nation in Andre’ Woodson. He leads a Kentucky team that averages 37 points a game. He will try and test the solid FSU defense. I just think when it is said and done FSU won’t have enough offensive firepower to keep up.

Winner: Kentucky 31, FSU 21

Chick-fil-A: Atlanta Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m. ESPN HD

Clemson (9-3), ACC No. 3

vs.

Auburn (8-4), SEC No. 5

Now this what I call a quality match-up! Auburn has won seven of nine games, mostly because of their sweet defense that allows objective 16.7 points a game. Clemson has won five of six and their average margin of victory is 16 points!

Winner: Auburn 20, Clemson 17

The Hoosiers have not beaten anybody good all year. Their best win was against Ball St. (7-5) and they are 0-5 vs. teams with a .500 or better record. Oklahoma St. doesn’t really deserve to be in a bowl game with a 6-6 relate, however, it’s a good match-up for them. OSU has lost all six games against teams with a .500 or better record, and their best win was against Texas Tech (8-4). OSU blew a game against Texas (9-3) that they should have won. Since they have the better win, and the showed some promise against Texas, they are the better pick.

Winner: Oklahoma St. 35, Indiana 29

The Badgers have a nice balanced run-pass attack from P.J. Hill and Tyler Donovan. Both facets of the game average 200 yards. That’s great to play virtually any style the game calls for. However, they will face a mad Tennessee team that had a five game win streak snapped in the conference championship game versus LSU.

Winner: Tennessee 31, Wisconsin 27 (OT)

AT&T Cotton: Dallas Jan. 1, 2008, 11:30 a.m. FOX

Missouri (11-2), Great 12 No. 2

vs.

Arkansas (8-4), SEC No. 6

Missouri got screwed out of a BCS bowl bid, somehow. I am still trying to figure out how you can go #1 to out of a BCS game after one loss. Especially when you bag passed up by Kansas, a team you finished ranked ahead of, and ahead of in your division. With that said, they do not get a easy game. This game features two gentlemen that were sent to New York in hopes to win a Heisman award. Those guys are QB Chase Daniels of Missouri, and Darren McFadden of Arkansas. When you peek, this game don’t forget about Felix Jones, who is McFadden’s partner in crime in the backfield, he averages 9.1 yards per carry!

Winner: Arkansas 42, Missouri 31

I absolutely love this match-up. The reason why I love it is because Texas Tech has a potent offense. Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree are one of the best, if not the best, pass-catch threats in the game. They meet up with Virginia, a team that allows impartial 18.8 points a game. Virginia has a solid pass defense, but they have allowed two teams to throw for 299 yards or more in the last nine games. They lost them both. Keep in mind Texas Tech averaged 457 yards – passing yards – a game! I don’t think they can hold the TT offense down enough.

Winner: Texas Tech 33, Virginia 27

Capital One: Orlando, Fla. Jan. 1, 2008, 1 p.m. ABC HD

Michigan (8-4), Big Ten No. 3

vs.

Florida (9-3), SEC No. 5

Just a terrible match-up for Michigan. This game might look similar to the Oregon-Michigan game when Dennis Dixon ran for 76 yards and a TD, threw for 300 yards and 3 TD. Not sure, the Gators will get more than 600 yards of offense like the Ducks but look for Tim Tebow to have similar success for the Gators.

Winner: Florida 38, Michigan 13

Rose Bowl presented by Citi: Pasadena, Calif. Jan. 1, 2008, 4:30 p.m. ABC HD

Illinois (9-3), Big 10 No. 2

vs.

USC (10-2), Pac 10 No. 1

Illinois doesn’t belong in a BCS game. No three-loss team should be picked, even if it means a Big 10, Pac 10, Rose Bowl match-up. That’s all I am going to say.

Winner: USC 42, Illinois 17

Allstate Sugar: New Orleans Jan. 1, 2008, 8:30 p.m. FOX

Hawaii (12-0), WAC No. 1

vs.

Georgia (10-2), SEC No. 3

Hawaii is the nation’s only undefeated team. They are led by Colt Brennan and June Jones run-and-shoot offense. The team rarely uses running formations and it’s nothing new for them to throw over 50 times a game. The pass pleased offense averages 450 passing yards a game and usually results with

Gator: Jacksonville, Fla. Jan. 1, 2008, 1 p.m. CBS

Virginia (9-3), ACC No. 3

vs.

Texas Tech (7-5), Big 12 No. 7

Outback: Tampa, Fla. Jan. 1, 2008, 11 a.m. ESPN HD

Wisconsin (9-3), Big Ten No. 4

vs.

Tennessee (8-4), SEC No. 2

Insight: Tempe, Ariz. Dec. 31, 6 p.m. NFL Network

Oklahoma St. (6-6), Big 12 No. 8

vs.

Indiana (7-5), Big Ten No. 6

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces: Fort Worth, Texas Dec. 31, 12:30 p.m. ESPN

California (6-6), Pac 10 No. 7

vs.

Air Force (9-3), MWC No. 2Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada of Navy leads the most prolific rushing offense in the nation. The Midshipmen average a jaw dropping 351 yards on the ground and nearly 40 points per game. Utah will have to fetch a way to contain the strong running game of Navy; if they can contain them, they will win this game because Navy’s defense is terrible. Utah has allowed just 30 total points in the last four games and has won seven of the last eight games.

Winner: Utah 31, Navy 28

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: New Orleans Dec. 21, 8 p.m. ESPN2 HD

Florida Atlantic (7-5), Sun Belt No. 1

vs.

Memphis (7-5), Conf. USA No. 5

The New Orleans bowl features a pair of teams that are not well known, and are not quality programs. Memphis has one win against a decent Southern Miss (7-5) team. The other six Memphis wins came against teams with a combined 13-58 win-loss characterize. Florida Atlantic is the same story, they got their first and only acquire against a team with a winning record the final week of the season and that was edifying enough to win the Sun Belt Conference. The other six wins came against teams with a 16-54 win-loss record. Since they are equally matched in nearly every statistical aspect of the game and the resume is, identical you have to take the team with the best single player. The best single player in this game is Sophomore QB Rusty Smith on Florida Atlantic. He gives them an edge in what should be a end game.

Winner: Florida Atlantic 35, Memphis 31

Papajohns.com Bowl: Birmingham, Ala. Dec. 22, 1 p.m. ESPN2 HD

Southern Miss. (7-5), Conf. USA No. 5

vs.

Cincinnati (9-3), Big East No. 3

This is not a good match-up. Cincinnati is the better team offensively (36.8 PPG) and on defense, they have created turnover after turnover, and they have done it all year long. Look for Southern Miss to be outclassed in this one.

Winner: Cincinnati

New Mexico: Albuquerque, N.M. Dec. 22, 4:30 p.m. ESPN HD

Nevada (6-6), WAC No. 4

vs.

New Mexico (8-4), Mountain West No. 4

The Lobos of New Mexico reached the 8-win mark for just the fourth time since 1965 and the second time in 10 seasons under coach Rocky Long. It is the ninth 8-win season in the program’s 109-year history. They face off against a dangerous Nevada team that put up 641 yards of total offense in the last game of the regular season. Colin Kaepernick is a duel threat QB (2,000 yards passing, 550 yards rushing) that makes the team very perilous. New Mexico must catch a way to contain him if they want to come by this game. I do not think they will.

Winner: Nevada 35, New Mexico 24

Pioneer Las Vegas: Las Vegas, Dec. 22, 8 p.m. ESPN HD

BYU (10-2), MWC No. 1

vs.

UCLA (6-6), Pac-10 No. 5

These two teams squared off earlier in the year making this a rematch game. They played in the Rose Bowl. UCLA took an early 20-0 lead in the second quarter that day and BYU reeled off 17 unanswered points making it a 20-17 game. UCLA establish the game away late and walked away with a 27-17 bag. BYU QB Max Hall had a big day throwing for nearly 400 yards and two scores so the UCLA defense should not be surprised by the pass-happy BYU offense this time. UCLA has both Patrick Cowan and Ben Olsen back; UCLA should be able to pull out a tight game once again. One thing you should not forget is the fact that UCLA has been the most unpredictable team in the Pac-10 conference all year…

Winner: UCLA 24, BYU 23

Sheraton Hawaii: Honolulu, Dec. 23, 8 p.m. ESPN

Boise Place (10-2), WAC No. 2

vs.

East Carolina (7-5), Conf. USA No. 3

Boise State gets a slump back to Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii bowl. It seems like a great residence to go to a bowl game but when you contemplate BSU went to a BCS game and beat Oklahoma impartial a year ago and just lost the conference title in Hawaii the last game of the season I don’t think this will be a great trip for the Broncos. However, they draw a week East Carolina team that they will punish for making them go back to Hawaii. Do not watch this game if you like defensive battles!

Winner: Boise State 42, ECU 24

Motor City: Detroit Dec. 26, 7:30 p.m. ESPN HD

Central Michigan (8-5), MAC No. 1

Central Michigan, the MAC champions for the second year in a row, put up 34 points a game and allow 36 points a game. Not exactly, a winning formula, however, a 70-14 loss against Clemson (9-3) skews the numbers a bit. The real good news for CM is the fact that they will play in the Motor City Bowl. That means they will have home-field advantage. Purdue started out the year 5-0 and have now lost five of the last seven. However, one of those wins earlier in the year was against Central Michigan. Purdue jumped out to a 38-0 lead and smacked them around all game long. This game will be much closer, but Purdue will still win.

Winner: Purdue 42, Central Michigan 31

Pacific Life Holiday: San Diego Dec. 27, 8 p.m. ESPN HD

Arizona Set (10-2), Pac-10 No. 2

vs.

Texas (9-3), Big-12 No. 4

Arizona Spot had a great season under new head coach Dennis Erickson. If that name sounds familiar, it is because he has had a lot of success at many college programs. Arizona State was snubbed a BCS birth in their hometown when the Fiesta bowl passed on them. This was not that shocking since the Pac-10 conference notoriously is snubbed by the BCS. The two things Texas and ASU lack is a real quality win against a top tier team. Both have great records but lost the big games they needed to win throughout the year. That will have to give in this immense match-up.

Winner: Arizona State 31, Texas 26

Champs Sports: Orlando, Fla. Dec. 28, 5 p.m. ESPN HD

Boston College (10-3), ACC No. 2

vs.

Michigan State (7-5), Big Ten No. 8

Welcome to the worst match-up of the bowl season folks! Boston College is a team that played in the ACC Championship game and was on the bubble to get a BCS birth after the loss. Michigan State finished 3-5 in the Big Ten, which in my opinion is the worst BCS conference in the nation. I have no idea how these two are playing each other, but one thing is certain, Boston College should be considered a huge favorite in this game. I will not call it a lock, the plan this football season has gone, but it is close to one.

Boston College 45, Michigan State 20

Texas: Houston Dec. 28, 8 p.m. NFL Network

TCU (7-5), MWC No. 5

vs.

Houston (8-4), Conf. USA No. 4

Houston, last years Conference USA champs, had another solid year, thanks in part to running back Anthony Aldridge. Last he averaged 10.1 yards per carry, this year averaged 6.4. He had 19 total touchdowns on in 12 games. The key to beating them is stopping the run. The agreeable news for TCU is they can halt the run. They have allowed 55 yards or fewer on the ground five times this year, even allowing a meager 12 rushing yards against UNLV. This will be a quality mid-major game.

Winner: Houston 31, TCU 20

Emerald: San Francisco Dec. 28, 8:30 p.m. ESPN HD

Maryland (6-6), ACC No. 9

vs.

Oregon State (8-4), Pac-10 No. 3

Oregon State arguably should have been in the Holiday Bowl; instead, they dropped two bowls down to the Emerald bowl. The Beavers of Oregon have won six of the last seven games, while the Maryland Terps have dropped four of six. Seek Information From the Beavers to take out their frustrations of a lower tier bowl in this one.

Winner: Oregon State 24, Maryland 14

Meineke Car Care: Charlotte, N.C. Dec. 29, 1 p.m. ESPN HD

UConn (9-3), Big East No. 2

vs.

Wake Forest (8-4), ACC No. 5

Even after 12 games, UConn is a bit of a mystery. They scheduled Duke (1-11), Maine (4-7, Sub Div.), Temple (4-8), Akron (4-8), and finally a good Virginia team, whom beat UConn. The biggest test they faced was West Virginia and they got beat 66-12. I am not sold on the team. Wake Forest played Virginia as well; they also lost 17-16. Wake Forest’s biggest test was Clemson and they got beat 44-10. Both teams are hard to figure out and appear to be even. If I am forced to pick, I will grasp the team closest to home, that team is WF who will be playing this game in North Carolina.

Winner: Wake Forest

AutoZone Liberty: Memphis, Tenn. Dec. 29, 4:30 p.m. ESPN HD

UCF (10-3), Conf. USA No. 1

vs.

Mississippi State (7-5), SEC No. 6

Notice for Central Florida, the Conference USA champions, to exercise a lot of RB Kevin Smith. Smith broke the all-time carries record in college football and will try to break Barry Sanders record for most rushing yards in a season. Cherish rushed for 277 yards, four touchdowns, on 38 carries in the conference championship game. Central Florida is built on offense; they have scored 34 or more points in seven straight games, all wins. Miss. St. is a battle-tested team that has played six ranked teams in its 12 games. They won two, beating Alabama and Kentucky.

Winner: UCF 31, MSU 28

Valero Alamo: San Antonio Dec. 29, 8 p.m. ESPN HD

Penn State (8-4), Big 10 No. 5

vs.

Texas A&M (7-5), Big 12 No. 6

Texas A&M comes into this game with momentum as they defeated rival Texas in the regular season finale. Before that game, they were losers of four of the last five. Penn Site enters the game on a losing note. They lost a head scratcher against Michigan State, a team they should beat. I am riding the momentum of a win over Texas.

Winner: Texas A&M 24, Penn State 23

PetroSun Independence: Shreveport, La. Dec. 30, 8 p.m. ESPN HD

Alabama

vs.

Colorado (6-6), Big 12 No. 7Louisiana-Monroe. Alabama comes in on a four game losing jog. Colorado limps in losers of four of six. This one is not worth watching and is proof that there are too many bowl games. Nevertheless, there has to be a winner, and that will be…Davone Bess or Ryan Grice-Mullen standing in the end zone with a Brennan special. They meet up with a Georgia team that prides itself on running the ball down your throat with Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown. It’s not novel for both RB to get 15 or more carries. The Bulldogs have the advantage on defense and Hawaii has a slight advantage on offense, however not as much advantage since Georgia can control the clock with the running game. That’s why Georgia will win the most entertaining BCS match-up this year.

Winner: Georgia 45, Hawaii 37

Tostitos Fiesta: Glendale, Ariz. Jan. 2, 2008, 8 p.m. FOX

West Virginia (10-2), Big East No. 1

vs.

Oklahoma (11-2), Big 12 No. 1

I absolutely love this match-up. Oklahoma will try to contain Pat White, Steve Slaton and the Mountaineers running attack. West Virginia averages nearly 300 yards on the ground. Both times WV lost, they averaged less than 3.9 yards per carry. Oklahoma features the better passing game and a solid running game that averages nearly 200 yards per game. Both teams average around 40 points a game and both teams allow less than 20 a game.

Winner: West Virginia 28, Oklahoma 27

FedEx Orange: Miami Jan. 3, 2008, 8 p.m. FOX

Kansas (11-1), Big 12 No. 3

vs.

Virginia Tech (11-2), ACC No. 1

This year Virginia Tech is a team led by its defense. The defensive unit is 3rd in the nation behind only USC and Ohio Place when you factor in yards allowed, points allowed, turnovers, and sacks. The Hokies have allowed 14 or less points seven times this season. Kansas is a team that gets into the bowl season somehow over Missouri, even though Missouri beat them and won the North Division. Don’t look into Kansas relate, this team scheduled a bunch of cup cakes. They played two teams OOC that went winless on the season (SE LOU. & FLA. INT.). They also didn’t have to play Texas or Oklahoma in the Big-12. They have fair one win against a team with a winning record that is a from a BCS conference (Texas AM 7-5) which means they have not beat a team that is receiving a single vote to be ranked as a top 25 team. Expect the Hokies to beat this unproven team.

Winner: Virginia Tech 27, Kansas 13

International: Toronto Jan. 5, 2008, Noon ESPN2 HD

Ball State (7-5), MAC No. 3

vs.

Rutgers (7-5), Big East No. 6

Ball State is led by QB Nate Davis who has passed for over 3,300 yards and 27 scores. Rutgers offense is led by RB Ray Rice who has gained 1,730 yards on the ground, averaging 5 yards a carry, in route to scoring 20 rushing touchdowns. Both teams averaged 31 points a game and have similar defenses. I will always take the team that can control the clock and game with a good running game.

Winner: Rutgers 33, Ball State 31

GMAC: Mobile, Ala. Jan. 6, 2008, 8 p.m. ESPN HD

Tulsa (9-4), Conf. USA No. 2

vs.

Bowling Green (8-4), MAC No. 2

Tulsa’s offense is one of the best in the nation. The offense has scored 35 points in 9 of the 13 games. The Golden Hurricane is 0-3 when scoring fewer than 4 touchdowns. In other words, the defense stinks. Bowling Green is a nice team, but every time they have played a full-time Division 1-A team with a .500 or better record they have lost. They are 8-0 against losing teams/Western Kentucky (swing Div-1A team) and 0-4 against teams who are bowl eligible.

Winner: Tulsa 44, Bowling Green 35

Allstate BCS Championship Game: Unusual Orleans Jan. 7, 2008, 8 p.m. FOX

Ohio State (11-1), Big 10 No. 1

vs.

LSU (11-2), SEC No. 1

They say defense wins championships. The saying couldn’t be truer with these two squads. Both teams have huge offenses and LSU defense struggled in conference play but the main reason why both teams are here is because the defensive units. LSU lost both games in triple OT and Ohio State lost to Illinois at home. The biggest factor in this game could approach down to some home cooking for LSU as this game is in New Orleans.

Winner: LSU 31, Ohio State 17

Projected Conference records:

3-5, ACC

1-7, Big-10

3-5, Big-12

3-2, Tall East

5-1, Pac-10

8-1, SEC

3-3, CUSA

0-3, MAC

1-4, MWC

1-0, SBELT

3-1, WAC
